What is a Doula
A Birth Doula is a professional who is trained in childbirth and provides continuous emotional and physical supports to a mother and her family before, during and after birth.
A Postpartum Doula cares for the mother and her family at hospital/home in the first weeks/months. Including breastfeeding support, infant care, light household chores and so on.
Birth/Postpartum Doula provides non-medical support, evidence based information and companionship.

A Birth Doula
● Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life
● Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
● Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
● Stays with the woman throughout the labor
● Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions
● Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
● Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience
● Allows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level

Benefit of Birth Doula Support
Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth
● tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
● reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience
● reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
● reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals

Research shows parents who receive support can:
● Feel more secure and cared for
● Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
● Have greater success with breastfeeding
● Have greater self-confidence
● Have less postpartum depression

● 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin
● 28% decrease in the risk of C-section
● 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
● 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
● 14% decrease in the risk of her newborn being admitted to a special care nursery
● 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience

Birth Doula Support
One prenatal complimentary meeting (1 hour)

After our initial meeting, I will have 2 prenatal visits (2 hours each). This gives us a chance to get to know each other!
I highly recommend taking a group Spinning Babies® Parent class to get ready for the birth physically and emotionally.
1st Visit: We talk about your labor and postpartum desires, review the childbirth process and birth preferences.
2nd Visit: We practice variety of comfort measures (Position, Massage, Breathing, Acupressure, TENS unit, Peanuts ball, etc.)
3rd Meeting: Spinning Babies
® Parent Class

*I'll be on-call 2 weeks before and after your due date, and will get to your place/hospital in 1.5 hour.

On THE Day: whenever you feel you want me to be with you, I will come over to your place and provide emotional, physical and informational supports to your entire family. I will suggest when we should be going to the hospital or birth center. I will come with you and provide continuous supports during the labor and until you see your baby. I will take basic pictures of the baby’s first moment. I will stay until you and your family are settled down (2~3 hours after baby is born). After you get home, I will have one postpartum visit (about 1 hour).
